Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is reportedly "fed up" with the NFL offseason approach that general manager Ted Thompson has shown throughout their tenure working together.
No one should blame McCarthy for being upset with Thompson about his lack of aggression in pursuing veteran players. A coach can only do so much with a group of players that are still learning the game. Free agency may be hit and miss, but not even attempting to bring in top talent is unacceptable.
Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in the NFL and most teams would be doing everything in their power to bring in elite talent around him. That is something that Thompson has time and time again refused to do. It has cost the Packers what could very well have been multiple Super Bowl titles.
According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, McCarthy is about done with the way that his boss has handled free agency in particular.
"According to several sources, McCarthy is fed up with his boss' unwillingness to take a chance and reinforce the roster with veteran players that might be unknown to the Packers but have the talent to contribute," McGinn wrote.
Taking chances on free agents is part of what makes the NFL such a great sport. Some teams will sign big names and get superstars, while others will sign them and get regression. It is all part of the process, but that doesn't mean that teams should steer clear of potential disappointment.
It has become obvious over the past two seasons that the Packers are not going to win Super Bowls with Rodgers powering them there. They have to bring more talent on board and it can't all come from rookies that are brought on in the NFL Draft.
Looking ahead at the upcoming offseason, it will be intriguing to see what the Packers do. Perhaps McCarthy is getting to the point where confronting Thompson is an option. He has to make his thoughts very clear to the front office, especially with the disappointing way that they have come up just short the last couple years.
Fans are beginning to be very frustrated by the Packers' lack of offseason aggression and it is obviously spreading inside the organization as well.
Green Bay has a short window left to compete for Super Bowls each and every year. Rodgers isn't getting any younger. McCarthy knows that and hopefully Thompson will realize it as well and decides to be more aggressive this offseason than he has been in years past.
Expect to hear a lot more news come out of Green Bay over the next couple months and don't be surprised if they are a bit more aggressive in free agency than normal.
