The St. Louis Cardinals are going to look to make some moves this offseason and rumors are beginning to fly that they could try to make a splash in MLB Free Agency. One name that has been mentioned as a potential target is Jordan Zimmerman, who played last season in Washington.
Adding a piece like Zimmerman would help power the Cardinals back to being a contender to win the NL Central.
John Lackey is a free agent, which would make the Cardinals need a starter even more. He was their top starter in the postseason and would be missed in a big way if he chooses to leave town. That being said, he is nowhere near the talent that Zimmerman is and the St. Louis starting rotation would be improved if that trade were made.
Last season as a member of the Nationals, Zimmerman ended up compiling a 13-10 record to go along with a 3.66 ERA. Those numbers were very solid and he is a legitimate No. 2 option in a rotation. Adding that into the rotation for the Cardinals would make them even more dangerous.
At 29 years old, Zimmerman still has plenty of baseball left to pitch in his career. He is likely looking for a long-term contract this season, which wouldn't be a bad idea for the Cardinals at all.
St. Louis is going to be fairly active, although taking care of their own free agents could be their course of action. Re-signing Lackey and outfielder Jason Heyward are two things that they have been wanting to do since the season ended. If Lackey is going to play another season, it would likely be with the Cardinals.
All of that being said, adding Zimmerman would be a perfect pickup for the Cardinals and would help the remain a dominant contender in the NL Central.
Plenty of other teams are going to have interest in Zimmerman and expect to see St. Louis be one of them.
