Chuck Pagano and the Indianapolis Colts fell to 3-4 on the season after losing to the New Orleans Saints yesterday and the franchise could be very close to firing Pagano with the early season struggles.
There have been rumors all season long that Pagano is on the hot seat and doesn't have a ton of wiggle room this season. Ryan Grigson and Pagano reportedly had a very heated discussion following the loss yesterday and it wouldn't be surprising to see big changes coming for the Colts soon.
Indianapolis had taken huge steps forward throughout Pagano's first three seasons, but things have come to a halt very quickly. It can't be blamed completely on Pagano, but the head coach is usually the first domino to fall. Pagano has been very incompetent from a game preparation standpoint, which is a big reason for the Colts' early game struggles.
Not only have there been rumors about Pagano being fired, Grigson has come up as a potential candidate to be fired as well.
No matter what the Colts and owner Jim Irsay decide to do, big changes are coming at the end of the season. Pagano has already turned down one contract extension offer and has shown no interest in renegotiating to this point in time. He has also said that he expects this to be the last season with the Colts.
Looking ahead at the Colts' Week 8 matchup against the Carolina Panthers, Pagano has to figure out a way to get his team a big victory. If he isn't able to do that, there is a very good chance that he will be packing his bags early and be fired by the Colts.
It will be intriguing to see what the Colts end up doing throughout the next couple of weeks. Pagano is without question the type of team that can't afford to waste time going through coaching drama. They have the talent to make a run at a Super Bowl this season, which is exactly what is happening with Pagano at this point in the season.
More rumors will begin swirling throughout the course of the next week leading up to the Carolina game, but the Colts are likely going to give Pagano one more chance to prove himself.
Don't be surprised if the Colts make a move if they drop to 3-5 on the season against Carolina. Grigson is already getting frustrated and the entire Colts' organization is unhappy with the direction that they are heading. There isn't any reason to hold onto Pagano if they continue struggling, which is a very harsh reality for the Colts.
