Following his latest off-field issues, Bill Cowher believes the Cleveland Browns could and should release second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel and move on from the mistake that they made drafting him. Rumors are flying about a lot of scenarios, but Cleveland definitely isn't happy.
He reportedly was involved in a domestic dispute and his girlfriend said that he hit her a couple times. She also said that the two of them were drinking. Alcohol has been a big issue for Manziel and it appeared that he had finally kicked the habit after checking himself into rehab during the offseason this past summer.
Just a few weeks ago, things appeared to be on the rise for Manziel. He got the start against the Tennessee Titans and managed to complete eight of his 15 passing attempts for 172 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Cleveland fans were finally behind Manziel and were petitioning for the Browns to start the talented second-year quarterback.
At just 22 years old, there is no denying the star potential that Manziel possesses. He is one of the more talented quarterbacks in the league and would without question be a starter for a few other teams right now in the league. Before the Browns cut Manziel, they should consider trading him and trying to get some type of value out of him.
It's hard to believe that things are spiraling so quickly for Manziel. He was selected with the No. 22 overall pick just last year and it seems things are already close to ending with the Browns.
Former Pittsburgh Steelers' coaching great Bill Cowher made it clear that he thinks the Browns should cut Manziel when talking to the media.
"I've watched Johnny Manziel now for a year and a half and I think he's a backup quarterback at best. And he's a distraction off the field," Cowher said on The NFL Today. "And listen, I believe in second chances but after the second chance, to me there's a zero-tolerance policy. He can't put himself into the position he put himself into. I would ask for his release and I would do it for this reason: in that locker room players want accountability ... and that's the message that needs to be sent right here, that you're accountable for your actions both on the field and off the field."
Whether or not the Browns decide to do that, we will have to wait to find out. Manziel is definitely on thin ice, however, and it would be surprising to see him on the field at any point in the near future. Josh McCown will continue starting at quarterback in the meantime.
Expect to hear plenty more rumors about Manziel and the Browns' potentially cutting ties with him over the next few days.
