Oscar winner Denzel Washington has directed films before, but is now moving on to his first stab in directing a TV show. He has been tapped to direct Grey's Anatomy, which is a fan favorite series created by Shonda Rhimes.
Shonda Rhimes has brought Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder and Private Practice into the living rooms and hearts of many fans. TV Line reported the news first about Washington's new job as director on the long-running Grey's.
Washington will direct the ninth episode of the current season. This is the twelfth season of the popular teaching hospital drama. His TV directorial debut will air in November during sweeps. The episode's details are being kept a secret, but we do know that Stacy McKee wrote it. Shooting will begin later this month.
Washington has had a steady career, winning film roles and awards for his work in those films. He has been on TV in his earlier years when he was a cast member on St. Elsewhere. This would be a welcome return to his TV roots except now he will be behind the camera calling the shots. Fans will be ecstatic for both Washington and the team at Grey's working together. TV Line stated that Grey's executive producer and director, Debbie Allen, and Washington are long-time friends.
Washington already has two Oscars (Best Supporting Actor for 1989's Glory and Best Actor for 2001's Training Day) to his array of accomplishments. During his career he has directed 2002's Antwone Fisher and 2007's The Great Debaters. He will be putting on the director's hat once again come later this month.
Will he prove worthy of an Emmy nod for directing the Grey's episode? What are your thoughts? How do you think he will fare walking the halls of Sloan-Grey Memorial Hospital?
