In preparation for her role as the opera singer Maria Callas in director Pablo Larrain's biographical, psychological drama "Maria," Angelina Jolie got into the rigorous training needed to discover her singing voice.
During a recent discussion on "Good Morning America," the actress shared insights into why she equated her vocal training sessions to a form of healing, recalling how, during her initial opera lesson, she found herself overcome with emotion and tears.
Jolie revealed, "We all don't realize that different things that happen to us in our life — I know you've been through many things."
"We hold them in our body. Everything is just locked somewhere to help us keep going."
"And so to really sing, and sing very fully, you have to unlock all of that."
The actress added, "So my first lesson, I took a deep breath and just cried... and then left!"
Through intensive vocal coaching and dedicating approximately seven months to mastering six of the arias associated with Callas, Jolie paid homage to the artist who passed away due to a heart attack at her residence in Paris on September 16, 1977.
"Maria" has continued to hypnotize audiences at events like the Toronto, Telluride, and New York film festivals, following its successful debut at the Venice Film Festival in September.
Jolie's performance is generating Oscar buzz for a potential nomination in the lead actress category, building on her previous win for Best Supporting Actress in "Girl, Uninterrupted."
