The Washington Redskins fell to the New York Giants on Thursday and it is becoming increasingly obvious that Kirk Cousins is not the answer at quarterback.
During the game against the Giants, Cousins ended up completing 30 of his 49 passes for 316 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He may not have had the worst game from a statistical standpoint, but it certainly wasn't one of his best moments as an NFL quarterback either. New York doesn't have a very good secondary either, which made his game even more disappointing.
While he doesn't have a terrible arm, he simply doesn't have the qualities to become the franchise cornerstone that the Redskins need their quarterback to be. Robert Griffin III may have been injured a lot over the past few seasons, but he does have the type of leadership qualities and abilities that the Redskins need to turn their franchise back around into a playoff contender.
Washington has a third quarterback alongside of Griffin and Cousins who could actually have more talent to be a starer than either of them. Colt McCoy played extremely well in limited playing time last year and showed that he is capable of stepping up and having big games when the Redskins call his number.
Jay Gruden simply has to figure out which direction he wants to go and whether or not he is willing to go down with the ship.
Griffin was said to be the starter all offseason long and the Redskins were all in with developing him and seeing whether or not he could turn things around. Just before the start of the season, Gruden changed his mind and made Cousins the starter. Now that the Redskins are 1-2 on the season and Cousins hasn't made huge improvements, it's time to see what either Griffin or McCoy is capable of doing.
At 27 years old, there are simply no more excuses that can be made for Cousins. He has had experience on the field and plenty of time to watch and learn off the field. Cousins hasn't made the necessary improvements to be a consistent starter each and every week and that is a major concern.
More than likely, the Redskins will continue starting for at least a couple more weeks. Gruden isn't ready to give up on Cousins and there is always the chance that the former Michigan State star quarterback will be able to turn things around and live up to the potential that Gruden sees in him.
That being said, it simply isn't going to be enough to keep him as the starter long-term. Washington doesn't need to waste anymore time trying to figure out whether or not Cousins is a better option than Griffin. Giving the starting job back to RGIII and seeing what he can do would be the right move and if he doesn't play well then finding another quarterback in the draft is what needs to happen.
Expect to see the Redskins stick with Cousins for the next couple of weeks and not see much improvement from him. Gruden may stick with him for the entire season, but even if he does that Cousins simply isn't the answer at QB for the Redskins moving forward.
