The Philadelphia Eagles signed DeMarco Murray to a huge deal this offseason, but after two games is he already getting the label of a free agency bust?
After signing with the Eagles this past offseason, Murray was immediately expected to have a huge season and be one of the best running backs in the NFL once again. He led the league last year with 392 carries for 1,845 yards and 13 touchdowns. The expectations have not come to pass so far for the Eagles through the first two games of the season.
Through the first two games of this season so far, Murray has carried the football a total of 21 times for an embarrassing 11 yards and a touchdown. Just looking at the numbers might have made you jump on the bust bandwagon for Murray.
It's hard to make the case for him not being labeled as a bust at this point in the season. He has looked dead in the water throughout the first two games and Chip Kelly is struggling to figure out ways to use him in the offense. Murray was obviously frustrated on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys and came up with an absolutely embarrassing performance against his former team.
At 27 years old, Murray is still in the prime of his career and this kind of drop off was very unexpected. Sam Bradford hasn't been very good as the Eagles' starting quarterback either and all of the offseason moves that Kelly made are beginning to look like massive mistakes.
That being said, there is still hope for Murray to turn his season back around in the coming weeks.
While the start of the season has been rough for the Eagles and Murray, it has still only been two games. It is way too early to get down on a running back who showed the ability to make big plays like Murray did last year with the Cowboys.
There have been many players throughout the history of the NFL that have struggled early on in the season after signing with a new team. Learning the new system of an offense is never easy, nor is adjusting to life in a new city. Both of those things are probably struggles for Murray so far this year.
Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what Week 3 holds for the Eagles and Murray.
Philadelphia cannot start of the season at 0-3 and still hope to come back and make the playoffs. Kelly knows that his team needs to figure out a way to get their offense going against a quality New York Jets football team. That will be easier said than done, but it will all start with whether or not the Eagles can figure out how to get their star running back going.
Expect to see Murray get his game going over the next couple of weeks and shed the early bust label that has been given to him.
