The Ohio State Buckeyes blew out Hawaii by a final score of 38-0 yesterday and Ezekiel Elliott made big improvements to his Heisman chances during the win.
Last week against the Virginia Tech Hokies, Elliott carried the football 11 times for 122 yards and a touchdown. He wasn't used nearly as much as Ohio State needs to use him if they want to make a legitimate run at winning back-to-back NCAA championships. This week against Hawaii, he saw much more work and produced exactly what t he Buckeyes needed.
Elliott carried the football 27 times for 101 yards and three touchdowns yesterday afternoon and was unstoppable for the Hawaii defense. They may not be an excellent competitor, but it was still a very impressive game from the star running back.
Coming into the 2015 season, Elliott was viewed by many to be the front-runner to win the Heisman. There are plenty of other talented players who are going to contend for the award, but very few who have the big play potential that Elliott possesses. Ohio State is going to pound the football down their opponents throats this year, especially when their Big Ten schedule opens up.
There are a few other running backs who are currently ahead of Elliott on the Heisman watch, but Elliott is prepared to keep his production up throughout the entire season. He also has a team that can help him compete for a title and that he can be a huge reason for that repeated championship.
At 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, Elliott is a very intimidating physical presence at the running back position. There aren't many players that possess the same type of speed, quickness and strength that he has and there are even fewer that have the consistency that he has shown throughout his career.
Looking ahead at the remainder of the 2015 season, Elliott has set the stage for a special season. He hasn't put up the superstar numbers that some expected, but a three touchdown game on a resume looks very good. Elliott also has quite a bit more potential to play into and that is a scary thought for the remaining opponents on the Ohio State schedule.
More than likely, the Buckeyes are going to end up making a run at the college football playoff. They have one of the most talented rosters that college football has seen in quite some time. Having Urban Meyer as their head coach gives them an advantage over some of the other teams vying for a spot as well.
Simply seeing the amount of playmakers that are on the field at any given moment for the Buckeyes is impressive.
Expect to see Elliott's name to continue rising in the Heisman watch from this point forward. He took a big step with the three touchdown performance against Hawaii and will use it to propel himself forward. Elliott definitely is one of the best players in the nation and won't go up against any defense that will be able to shut him down.
