The Broadway production of 'Once Upon a Mattress,' starring Sutton Foster and Michael Urie as Winnifred the Woebegone and Prince Dauntless, has revealed its principal cast, including two performers reprising their roles from the original New York City Center Encores! staging.
The previously announced revival will have a limited engagement until Saturday, Nov. 30, at Broadway's Hudson Theatre, starting with previews on Wednesday, July 31, and opening on Monday, Aug. 12.
The newly revealed cast members include Brooks Ashmanskas the Wizard, Daniel Breaker as the Jester, Will Chase as Sir Harry and Ana Gasteyer as Queen Aggravain. Nikki Renée Daniels and David Patrick Kelly will reprise their Encores! roles as Lady Larken and King Sextimus, respectively.
'Once Upon a Mattress' is a comedic retelling of 'The Princess and the Pea,' in which Winnifred has to convince Aggravain of her worth to marry her son, Dauntless.
Lear deBessonet is the director of this new production based on a new adaptation of Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) from the original book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. The music is by Mary Rodgers, and the lyrics are by Barer.
The Broadway production features choreography by Lorin Latarro, scenic design by Tony Award winner David Zinn, lighting design by Tony Award winner Justin Townsend, costume design by Andrea Hood, sound design by Tony Award winner Kai Harada, and hair and wig design by J. Jared Janas. Orchestrations are by Tony Award winner Bruce Coughlin, with music supervision by Mary-Mitchell Campbell and music direction by Annbritt duChateau. Cody Renard Richard serves as the production stage manager.
Following its New York engagement, the production will go to Los Angeles for a four-week run at Center Theatre Group's Ahmanson Theatre on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, from Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025.
