The Broadway sensation 'Hadestown' is set to take to the stage for the first time. The acclaimed musical by Anaïs Mitchell will open at Theatre Royal Sydney in Sydney, Australia, in Feb 2025.

The production will be co-presented by Opera Australia, the country's principal opera company, which also regularly produces musicals.

Five years after its Broadway premiere in 2019, 'Hadestown' won eight Tony Awards, including Best Score and Best Director. The popular show also won the Grammy Award for Best Show Theatre Album.

"I'm absolutely thrilled that we're able to bring this incredible new musical to Australia for the first time, and I'm sure it will be as adored here has it has been overseas, finding a whole new legion of fans," Opera Australia's artistic director Jo Davies said.

Davies praised the creator and writer Mitchell as an amazing talent. She said she looks forward to working with her and her team.

JONES Theatrical Group's Suzanne Jones added that 'Hadestown' is one Broadway musical experience people would remember forever. She described it as magical, bold, exciting, and full of love and promise.

'Hadestown' began as Mitchell's independent theater project. With the help of her creative partner Rachel Chavkin, it was reimagined as a genre-defying musical that combines jazz with influences from New Orleans and contemporary American folk music to tell the epic story of Orpheus and Eurydice.

The show is a theatrical production featuring a dynamic group of performers, dancers, and singers that invites the audience to imagine a different world while delivering a profoundly poignant and fiercely optimistic experience.

There will be open call auditions for 'Hadestown' roles in Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16.
