Grammy Award winner Stephanie Mills, best known for her Grammy-winning music and her role as 'Dorothy' in the original production of 'The Wiz,' will return to Broadway on Tuesday, July 2 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Mills will play the role of 'Hermes' in the cast of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning Best Musical, 'Hadestown.'
'Hadestown' will be Mills' first appearance on the Main Stem in over thirty years and her first time replacing in a role on Broadway.
"After nearly 50 years in the entertainment business, which is all I've ever known, every fiber of my professional being I owe to the discipline of my Broadway training as a child at the beginning of my career," Mill said. "The joy of life's full circle moment for me is returning to my roots-only this time as Hermes in Hadestown. Power!"
Mills made her Broadway debut in 1968's 'Maggie Flynn.' However, she rose to her stardom for her portrayal of 'Dorothy' in the original and 1984 revival productions of 'The Wiz.'
In 1989, she played in a theatrical production of 'Stephanie Mills Comes 'Home' to Broadway,' which lasted eight performances.
She later had a Grammy-winning music career and starred as Aunt Em on 'The Wiz: Live on NBC.'
Mills will now replace Jon Jon Briones in the lead role of 'Hermes.' As previously announced, the cast will include Maia Reficco and Yola in their respective parts on Tuesday, July 2, and Jon Jon Briones, Isa Briones (as Eurydice), and Ani DiFranco (as Persephone) will all perform their final performances on Sunday, June 30.
The remaining cast members of 'Hadestown' include Jordan Fisher as Orpheus, Phillip Boykin as Hades, Jessie Shelton, Kay Trinidad, and Brit West as the Fates.
