American actress and model Lola Tung, best known for her portrayal of "Isabel 'Belly' Conklin" in the hit Prime Video series "The Summer I Turned Pretty," is set to make her Broadway debut in the Tony Award-winning production "Hadestown," according to Broadway World.
Lola Tung, the New 'Hadestown' 'Eurydice'
Tung, who studied in New York's famous LaGuardia High School where the 1980s film "Fame" was set, will perform as "Eurydice" starting on Feb. 9 until March 17, succeeding Solea Pfeiffer who will take on the role one last time on Feb. 4.
Debuting alongside the model is Grammy-winning folk artist Ani DiFranco, who was previously announced to be playing "Persephone."
In a statement, Tung expressed her excitement as the incoming actress for 'Euridice," saying, "I saw Hadestown in February of 2020 and immediately fell in love with the show."
"I'd had dreams of being on Broadway since I performed in my middle school musicals, and after seeing Hadestown I instantly added it to the little list of dream shows in my mind," she added.
The casting itself was announced by show producers Dale Franzen, Hunter Arnold, Tom Kirdahy, and Mara Isaacs last Tuesday, Jan. 9. Originally, the Greek songbird was played by Eva Noblezada in the production's inaugural Broadway run back in 2019.
What is 'Hadestown' About?
The critically acclaimed and long-running production of "Hadestown" centers its story on the classic Greek myth of "Orpheus" and "Eurydice" as paralleled by the relationship of "Hades" and "Persephone," combining their narratives in a dichotomous depiction of gods and mortals.
The singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell will underscore the musical with moody jazz and blues-inspired songs, which is weirdly fitting of the Greek mythos setting of the production.
The Tony-winning team members in charge of creative aspects within the musical include set designer Rachel Hauck, sound designers Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz, costume designer Michael Krass, and lighting designer Bradley King.
Also working in the creative team are dramaturg Ken Cerniglia and stage choreographer David Neumann, with Liam Robinson working on musical supervision and vocal arrangements alongside Tony-winning arranger-orchestrators Todd Sickafoose and Michael Chorney.
In 2019, the musical won a total of eight Tony Awards, including one for "Best Director of a Musical" with its recipient Rachel Chavkin and another for "Best Featured Actor in a Musical" which was given to André De Shields who played "Hermes."
It also won "Best Musical" amongst Broadway heavy-hitters like "Beetlejuice" and "The Prom."
