The Miami Marlins are known for doing crazy things in MLB Free Agency and they have a few options this offseason. Rumors are starting to fly that Yoenis Cespedes could end up signing with the Marlins.
Bleacher Report has started the rumors with one of their baseball analysts predicting that he will end up in Miami. Finding a way to afford the type of contract that Cespedes will want isn't going to be easy, but it would be well worth the money. Pairing Giancarlo Stanton alongside of Cespedes would make for a very dangerous and powerful lineup.
Cespedes would give the Marlins yet another power bat to help them outscore other teams. They have a couple good starting pitchers, but they don't have enough talent in their rotation to win with pitching.
Last season split between the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets, Cespedes ended up recording a .291 batting average to go along with 35 home runs and 105 RBI's.
At 30 years old, Cespedes still has plenty of baseball left to play in his career. Any time that signs him is going to have a power bat for the next five-to-seven years. Miami needs to bring in the type of talent that they can build around long-term, which fits Cespedes perfectly.
Miami would be very wise to do what they can to convince Cespedes to join the rebuilding program that they have. Now that they have hired Don Mattingly to be their new manager, there is a lot more intrigue about signing with them in free agency. It has been a long time since the Marlins have been considered potential playoff contenders, but if they make a few of the right moves they will be much closer.
There are going to be quite a few teams coming after Cespedes in free agency this offseason. Miami is going to have to sell him on being a part of the rebuild, giving him a big contract and having him become the face of the franchise alongside of Stanton.
Expect to hear plenty more rumors about the Marlins and Cespedes in the near future, but they certainly could be a team to keep an eye on.
