There is a huge debate between all of the fans of Doctor Who about who the best Doctor is. Some will say that your favorite is always your first Doctor experienced, but this is why Sylvestor McCoy trumps them all.
Doctor Who is a beloved show that runs on BBC, and has been a staple of the network for the better part of the last half century. Doctor Who has just had it's 50th Anniversary a few years back, and is still running strong, and gaining fans daily. What is it that makes Doctor Who so special for generations of fans?
I would venture to say that it is in each actors unique ability to charm everyone he meets. They each trow in the perfect mixture of wit, charm, humor, and darkness. The Doctor is a brazen hero who charges into the face of danger with his trusty sonic screwdriver at the ready. From an outsiders perspective, fans of the show are a bunch of weirdo's, obsessed with a television show on British television that has the effects and props of a 1960's B movie. This is one of the aspects that makes Doctor Who a treasure: who have to peek inside of the wrapping to understand why there is so much love for this television show. Doctor Who has a leg up on all of the other television shows out there, it has an incredibly interesting story. It is such a compelling story, that if you give the show 2-3 episode you will be forever hooked.
So, who is your favorite Doctor? Is it Chris Eccleston and his crazy, adrenaline-filled angry Doctor, Tom Baker and his ability to be grownup with the soul of a child equipped with his long scarf? Is it David Tennant with his soft eyes and sex appeal that had young women swooning for multiple seasons, or is it Matt Smith with his quirky nerdiness, his suspenders and bow tie (cause bow ties are cool), and his fez? Colin Baker and his lovely coat of many colors, or Peter Davidson and his celery? How do you truly settle with just one? I have my favorite Doctor, and it is my first, Chris Eccleston. He was perfect.
Steven Moffat has a story that he told Radio Times about son, Louis and the first time that he met Sylvester McCoy, his favorite Doctor. If this story doesn't win you over, I think that there is nothing that will. The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary episode, 'The Day of the Doctor', Moffat says that while at the anniversary party for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary episode, 'The Day of the Doctor', was simulcast in 94 countries and in 1,500 countries around the globe. Louis spotted McCoy on set and asked his father if he could meet him. My words can do this encounter no justice, so I will just let you read it for yourself.
According to Moffat, "Louis clutched my arm and said, "Dad, is that Sylvester McCoy?" "Yes, it is." "Dad, can I meet him?" "I'm sure I can arrange that." Later Louis says, "Please, I need to meet him." So I get a message up to Sylvester asking him to hang around, "My son wants to meet you." This will make you fall in love with Sylvester as the best Doctor ever."
"I took Louis up and, across the room, Sylvester saw us arriving. He leapt up from a sofa - and he's not a young man - and he spun his walking cane like the Doctor's umbrella and said, "Louis, Louis! I'm falling over. Could you just come and help me?" So Louis rushed over and helped Doctor No 7 and he thanked him very much. He'd turned into the seventh Doctor like that [clicks fingers] and I cannot now hear a bad word about his Doctor."
This is why Doctor Who is a magical show. In the story, the Doctor travels through time and space, and although McCoy is no longer the Doctor, he recognized Louis as a fan, and took on the persona. This is exactly what Louis wanted. He didn't mind meeting Sylvester McCoy, the actor, but to have that once-in-a-lifetime encounter with his Doctor is a memory that will stay with him until the day that he passes on. This is the same encounter that I hope to have one day, if I ever get to meet Eccleston.
