Monday's Conan episode was elaborately designed around their "Clueless Gamer" segment featuring Bethesda's popular RPG, Fallout 4. The talk show's cold open featured O'Brien preparing for a post-apocalyptic life as a vault dweller from the game's infamous Vault 111. Conan and his gaming counterpart, Aaron Bleyaert, then proceed to play and review the game in their classically sopho-moronic manner.
The mayhem of the show starts with Conan driving a classic car up to the gates of the show. Sirens start blaring in the background and he and the guard converse rather calmly about the world's impending doom. Conan then makes his way to a vault especially designed for the show and "Then he rips off his suit to reveal his very own Fallout vault uniform.” Like I said. Elaborate. He even kind of looks like the Fallout 4 mascot, Vault Boy. It's a little disturbing.
Once he is inside the rather impressive vault, he and Bleyaert begin their review. For the most part, Conan seems to enjoy the game but "He clearly wasn't impressed by the company's official merchandise: dressed in a Vault 111 suit and a Pip-Boy wearable, he quipped, 'Why am I wearing Microsoft's version of the Apple Watch?'" He also compared the skin-tight vault suit to something an ousted "avant-garde Swedish pop group" member might wear.
For those of you not already aware; yes, the Collector's Edition of Fallout 4 will be sold with a real-life version of the Pip-Boy. You will be able to sync the game up to your iPhone and be look at your arm (not your in-game arm) for a more immersive and realistic gaming experience. "'As far as stupid gimmicks go, I chose the best f*cking one,' said Bethesda's Todd Howard on stage at E3." Umm... Yeah, you think?!
I will say that Conan's preoccupation with his own bum and his desperate desire to find some virtual nooky is a little off-putting, but the over all feel of the review is a lot of fun and very well executed. Conan did make some excellent observations about Fallout 4 and seems to enjoy the game's patented V.A.T.S aiming system. He even went so far as to punch fellow vault dweller Bleyaert in the arm using the show's own version of V.A.T.S. in a rather amusing display of Tom Foolery.
Game Rant was quick to point out, "Fallout 4's inclusion in the popular segment won't be the first time a Bethesda game has gotten the 'Clueless Gamer' treatment, as the studio's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has previously been featured on the show." By the looks of things, I doubt it will be the last.
Fallout 4 was released today and is now being sold everywhere. If you have played the game, tell us what you think by using the comments below. We look forward to hearing from you!
