Johnny Manziel started last week and played decently, but didn't play great. What five reasons can be given to support the statement that the Cleveland Browns must stick with Manziel as their starting quarterback?
1. At 22 Years Old He Provides Hope for the Future
Age is the most obvious reason why he needs to stay on the field for the rebuilding Browns. Josh McCown is 36 years old and has absolutely no chance of being a long-term option for Cleveland. Manziel was the Browns' first-round pick last season and at 22 years old still has plenty of time to develop and become the starting caliber quarterback that they were hoping he would be.
2. His Dual-Threat Ability
Quarterbacks are becoming much more athletic in today's game and Manziel possesses the dual-threat ability that makes many quarterbacks so dangerous. He can make plays with his arm, but also has the athleticism and speed to get outside the pocket and make plays with his legs. That ability can be worked with and the Browns' coaching staff has to give him the playing time.
3. The Obvious Improvement from Last Season to This Year
Manziel may still have quite a few flaws in his game, but there is obvious improvement in him from last season to this year. Cleveland cannot deny that he has taken the necessary steps to develop and become a starting quarterback this season. Mike Pettine may not like Manziel's attitude, but his game has developed to the point where he is good enough to start over McCown.
4. There is Nothing to Lose at This Point
Cleveland is already out of the playoff race and they have absolutely nothing to lose by playing and developing a young quarterback. Manziel needs playing time to have any chance at taking the next step and the Browns have to give it to him. They may not win more than another game or two this season, but if they can get Manziel better by doing so then they have to start him.
5. Ticket Sales Will Continue Skyrocketing
Perhaps the most obvious thing that will happen if the Browns start Manziel is that their tickets will sell in a big way. There is a lot of hype surrounding Manziel and it hasn't gone away with his slow start to his NFL career. Cleveland fans would flock to the stadium to check out their potential long-term quarterback option if he starts.
Overview
All of that being said, the Browns simply don't have any other option other than to start Manziel if they truly want to improve moving forward. Cleveland can't afford to waste time on McCown anymore and Manziel has shown signs of being a starting caliber quarterback. Giving him some time to play and figure out whether or not those signs are legitimate is exactly what Cleveland needs to do.
What do you guys think about this situation? Do you think that Manziel should continue being the starting quarterback?
