Draftkings Scandal Spilling Into Video Games

This past month, the fantasy sports website DraftKings and its rival FanDuel are being investigated by the government for possible illegal practices, and video games are getting hit as well.

With the rise of eSports, games like League of Legends and Dota 2 are also falling under the scrutiny of the investigation. "Operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel have recently expanded their offerings to include eSports, with the former acquiring AlphaDraft last month."

This isn't good. Pro-gaming has long been mocked in the U.S. as not a "real sport," and with the federal investigation touching on games with multi-million dollar prize-pools, this could potentially hurt the reputation of a budding industry.

I, for one, have a much greater interest in video games than in traditional sports. I've watched several matches of the current League of Legends world championship series, and I've watched a few professional matches of other games as well. A gambling investigation that could potentially affect the games I enjoy is not a good thing. If DraftKings and FanDuel do in fact have employees using insider info to turn a profit, I hope they face justice quickly, because "this investigation is now going beyond information leaks regarding NFL data, and affecting participants in online games such as DOTA 2."

As one person put it, "if Nevada thinks there's something amiss, you are definitely gonna get your a** investigated." One can only hope that the damage done by this investigation does not affect eSports nor pro-gaming in general.
