After his major struggles in Week 1, should fantasy football owners still view Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning as their starter in Week 2?
During his Week 1 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens, Manning ended up completing 24 of his 40 passing attempts for 175 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. Those numbers weren't very Manning like and there are major concerns about his production moving forward. Reports came out prior to the season that Manning couldn't feel his fingers.
Looking ahead to Week 2 against the very solid defense of the Kansas City Chiefs, should fantasy football owners be concerned about starting Manning as their QB1?
Manning certainly has the targets that he needs to come through with a big Week 2 performance. Baltimore put pressure on him all day long, which is exactly what the Chiefs are going to attempt to do. Denver's offensive line struggled in a big way in Week 1 and showed exactly why there were so many question marks after the overhaul that they went through.
C.J. Anderson was expected to be a legitimate number one running back, but ended up being a major bust in Week 1. He carried the football 12 times for just 29 years and no touchdowns.
Kansas City is going to do everything in their power to bring pressure on Manning and force him to make quick decisions. Seeing the latest news that Manning is now on the Broncos' injury report with a back injury shouldn't make fantasy owners feel much better about his Week 2 chances. That being said, never give up on a talent like Peyton too early.
Giving him another week to prove that his first game of the 2015 season was a fluke is the smartest decision for fantasy owners. If he struggles mightily against Kansas City this week, it's time to sell as quickly as possible and find another starting option.
Manning simply brings too much to the table to bail on this early in the season. Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders are one of the top duos at the wide receiver position in the NFL, but if Manning can't get them the football there is a major concern. Expect to see Manning improve his numbers a bit in Week 2, but there is always a chance that he ends up looking washed up once again.
Don't move on from him just yet, but have a backup option on your bench or via a trade just in case his second week is as poor as his first.
