Dez Bryant was injured on Sunday night with a broken foot and now the question is, can the Dallas Cowboys survive the loss of their star wide receiver?
Jason Garrett can't be pleased with the way that his team struggled last night in a narrow victory against their division rival New York Giants. They shouldn't have been close to losing that football game and there are many reasons for concern after watching the Cowboys flounder around in the question mark issues that many saw for them heading into Week 1.
They didn't answer any of the question marks that they had heading into the game and there are some even bigger ones coming out of it. That isn't to say that they can't bounce back and answer all of them. Bryan't injury will test the offense even more after it was already tested enough.
At 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, there is no defensive back that can stand up to Bryant one-on-one. His presence has given Dallas the ability to create a mismatch nearly each and every week. Not having that on the field over for the foreseeable future is going to be very difficult to overcome and it puts a lot of pressure on quarterback Tony Romo.
Answering the question of whether or not the Cowboys can survive without Bryant is a very difficult task.
Losing a number one wide receiver is never easy to come back from. Bryant caught 88 passes for 1,320 yards and 16 touchdowns throughout the 2014 season. Romo had one of the best seasons that he has had in his career and a lot of it had to do with the production that Bryant and star running back DeMarco Murray gave them.
Murray chose to leave the Cowboys this past offseason in free agency for the Philadelphia Eagles, which means that the Dallas offense has neither of their main playmakers last year.
There is no doubt that the Cowboys' offense is going to take a major blow with the news that Bryant will miss at least the next 4-6 weeks with his broken foot. Dallas has a very tough schedule over the next six weeks, including games against Philadelphia, Atlanta and New England. All three of those teams immediately became favorites to beat the Cowboys when Bryant went down with his injury.
Romo is going to have to take his game to the next level if he wants to lead his team through the next few weeks without his top receiver. Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and Jason Witten are going to have to step up in a big way for the Cowboys to have any type of dangerous offense. They were able to beat the Giants without a huge performance from Bryant, but that won't happen moving forward.
Can the Cowboys survive without their star wide receiver? They absolutely can, but it will take a team effort and players stepping up and playing above their expectations to do so. This is a tough injury for Dallas to have to go through, but they definitely can rebound from it and remain contenders in the NFC.
