Kam Chancellor has been holding out of all Seattle Seahawks team activities and his teammates don't expect to see him play during the 2015 NFL season. He is looking for a new contract and hasn't been very happy since others got extensions this past offseason and he didn't. There is a good chance that he will sit the entire season or that the Seahawks will end up trading him to move past this situation.
Whenever teammates don't expect a player to play, there is normally a good reason for them to believe that. There is a good chance that he has talked to them about his intentions, although losing the type of money that Chancellor would lose by holding out can convince a player to change his mind.
Chancellor has been one of the most dominant safeties in the NFL over the past few seasons. He is a big reason that the Seattle defense has been as good as it has been, even though he hasn't been talked about quite as much as Richard Sherman. Without Chancellor on the field, there would be no chance that the Seahawks would have had as much defensive success as they have had.
At 27 years old, Chancellor is in the prime of his career and was poised for a monstrous season in 2015.
During the 2014 season with the Seahawks, Chancellor recorded 78 tackles, a forced fumble, an interception and six defensed passes. His big hit ability forced offensive players to shy away from his area of the field, but he still made quite a few running backs and wide receivers pay for trying him.
There is no question that Seattle should try to get a new contract done with Chancellor before the start of the season. They don't have a ton of money to work with, but they can't afford to lose the leadership and star power that Chancellor brings to their defense. Reports have already begun to come up about teams showing interest in trading for him, with the New York Giants being the most talked about team right now.
It will be very interesting to see how this situation goes over the next few weeks. The NFL's trade deadline is fairly early on in the season and they could decide to make a move with their star safety before that time.
Expect to see Chancellor's holdout continue into the regular season. He certainly seems fine with missing regular season time to prove his point, although that likely isn't going to get him everything that he wants.
