Can James Jones Make an Impact for the Green Bay Packers in 2015?

The Green Bay Packers needed to bring in a new receiver and were able to sign James Jones. Now the question becomes, can he make an impact in 2015?

Jones played for the Packers just two seasons ago before signing with the Oakland Raiders last offseason. He had some very productive seasons with Green Bay and is hoping to pick up where he left off. After seeing Jordy Nelson go down with a torn ACL, it is very likely that Jones will immediately take over the third receiver role behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.

Ted Thompson decided to make the move instead of rolling with Jeff Janis, Ty Montgomery and Myles White as the three young receivers who would have to step up and rotate into the game to make a difference. Jones is definitely a much safer bet, although he isn't going to be able to fix the void left by Nelson.

During the 2014 season with the Raiders, Jones caught 73 passes for 666 yards and six touchdowns. Those numbers weren't bad at all and it was a bit surprising to see the Raiders release him. The New York Giants picked him up for the preseason but decided to move on from him on cut day.

Green Bay's history with Jones makes the pickup a good one despite the fact that the Giants didn't want him.

Aaron Rodgers is capable of making players better around him and loved Jones during his first tenure with the Packers. Jones ended up catching 37 touchdowns throughout his Green Bay career before leaving. He even caught 14 touchdowns on the season during 2012 and was one of Rodgers' favorite targets.

So to answer the question, there is no doubt that Jones can be an impact player for the Packers. He has done it before and he will do it again. Don't expect him to come through with monstrous stats, but he is going to have some games where he makes key plays that help pull off wins.

It will be interesting to see what ends up happening this season and what kind of production the Packers get from Jones. He isn't going to be asked to start, but coming in as the third receiver he will cause some trouble for opposing defenses.

All of that being said, it's great to see Jones returning to Green Bay where everything began. He is loved by the fan base and will likely have a large role and be instrumental in the Packers' 2015 season.

Expect this move to come up big for the Packers throughout the season and to see Jones fit into the offense smoothly.
