Reggie Wayne was signed by the New England Patriots just a couple weeks ago, but he will reportedly not make the teams final 2015 53-man roster. It is a very disappointing piece of news for Wayne, but Indianapolis Colts fans are dancing for joy after hearing this news. They will not have to see their beloved fan favorite play for one of their biggest rivals.
According to a report from Josina Anderson, Wayne will not be on the final roster. She didn't say why he wouldn't make it, but ESPN's Adam Schefter followed up her report with news that he asked for his release.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Wayne throughout the next few weeks. Asking for his release may mean that he will just sit out the season, but there are two other teams that could use some help at the wide receiver position. The Carolina Panthers are perhaps the most needy team, but the Green Bay Packers could very well show interest in Wayne as well.
There were reports immediately after Jordy Nelson tore his ACL that the Packers could have an interest in Wayne. He did consider waiting to see if Green Bay was interested before signing with the Patriots, but the Packers waited too long. Perhaps they will seize this opportunity and bring in the veteran receiver.
No matter where Wayne ends up, he still has some football left to play before retiring. He showed that this past week in New England's final preseason game with two catches for 24 yards. Obviously, those numbers aren't huge, but he was still able to show something to the teams that could consider signing him.
That being said, it won't take long before teams begin showing interest in bringing him on board. Both the Packers and Panthers will likely approach him about a potential contract within the next couple days.
Expect to see Wayne latch onto a new team in the near future, even though this was a big surprise to say the least. It isn't very often that a player asks for his release from a team as talented as the Patriots. Wayne isn't scared to make his opinions known and there is a good chance that he will fit better with whoever he ends up signing with for the 2015 season.
