The Dallas Cowboys are in need of some help at the running back position and should aggressively pursue a trade or signing of Denver Broncos running back, Montee Ball. He is reportedly on the roster bubble and could be released, but the Broncos haven't made up their mind yet. Ball is exactly the type of piece that could fix the Cowboys' running back issues and they need to do whatever they can to bring him on board.
According to a report from Charean Williams, the Cowboys would be interested in signing Ball if the Broncos release him.
Ball has received the "bust" label over the past couple of seasons due to his inconsistency in Denver. He was expected to break out for the Broncos a couple years back, but ended up sinking to the bottom of the depth chart and missing time due to injuries.
He simply hasn't shown the ability to stay healthy or consistent, which has made his future with the Broncos extremely questionable.
Getting a fresh start could be exactly what the doctor ordered for the former Wisconsin Badgers superstar. He would get that fresh start behind the best offensive line in the NFL, which would immediately improve his value. Denver doesn't have a bad offensive line, but they are nothing compared to what the Cowboys have.
At this point in time, Dallas is heading into the season with just Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle at the running back position. Those two players both have starting talent, but neither player has stepped up and shown that they are capable of handling he starting role this year.
If Denver is really as sour on Ball as it seems, there is a good chance that he could be part of their final roster cuts. Dallas should be all over the free agency market trying to sign Ball if he is released.
However, while it definitely seems like the Broncos aren't happy with Ball and could cut him, that is far from a guarantee at this point in time. There is a chance that Denver could decide to hold on to him for one more season for depth purposes. If that ends up being the case, the Cowboys should immediately call John Elway and see what it would take to acquire him.
Heading into his third NFL season, Ball still has plenty of time to figure things out and get his career back on track. He is just 24 years old and has plenty of potential left to reach for moving forward.
No matter what the Broncos decide to do with Ball over the next week, the Cowboys need to do whatever they can to bring him on board. Ball would fit perfectly into their offensive system and would help fix the hole that DeMarco Murray left. Jones must be aggressive if he wants his team to have any chance at making the playoffs in a very tough NFC this season.
