With 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' doing pretty well last year, the rumor of a sequel, 'War for the Planet of the Apes' has been confirmed. Here's what to look for.
Many, many moons ago, I had the singular fortune to watch the original 1968 Planet of the Apes, the first released movie of the series. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Dawn etc. and now War for the Planet of the Apes are all prequels to that original, albeit, there have been some rather significant changes unless War addresses it. The main difference is the fall of humanity. In 1968, it was due to a global thermonuclear war (the fear then). Now it's a virus that wipes out humanity (the fear now).
Director Matt Reeves has released the first set photo of the new movie on Twitter. This confirms some of the previous reports of an October filming start. The current expected release date rumor is sometime in July of 2017, so they'll have plenty of time to work on it.
Andy Serkis (Gollum) will be returning as Caesar, the evolved ape who's been leading the genocide against the last remaining humans. I'm personally rather curious to see if at some point the apes try to enslave the humans as happened in the original. Who knows? It might happen in another movie, albeit it seems unlikely. In an interview back in 2014, Matt Reeves stated:
"The idea would never be to remake the '68 film. . . . There might be some of those events from another perspective, and obviously to also see them as events that grew out of everything that we've been watching from this new iteration. They wouldn't be exactly the same either. So if, and when, we ever get there, which I think is an exciting notion, it would definitely not be a remake but it would be sort of a retelling of those events from a new perspective. And the events themselves would probably be a bit different since they will have grown out of these films."
One of the interesting re-visitations so far is the released photo of the apes on horseback on the beach. If they end up walking by the Statue of Liberty, it's going to be one of those moments where fans of the original will be getting up and screaming. The original movie ended with the human protagonist realizing that the apes' planet was actually earth.
However the story goes, whatever path Reeves plans to take the series, I'll be sure to keep cheering on the humans, just like I did the '68 original.
So tell us your thoughts on the series and the upcoming movie!
