Tim Tebow is one of the most polarizing names in the NFL, and is hoping to finish off a very solid preseason with a roster spot. Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles have Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez ahead of him on the depth chart, and will have to choose between Tebow and Matt Barkley for their third quarterback spot. There are five reasons in particular that Tebow should be kept over Barkley, and Kelly must make the decision to keep Tebow around.
Kelly has had a very intriguing offseason to say the least, and has made quite a few moves that haven't made the Eagles' fan base happy. Signing Tebow was one of those moves, and trading away both LeSean McCoy and Nick Foles weren't popular decisions either. Bringing DeMarco Murray in to replace McCoy made the fans happier, but there are still quite a few questions coming from the fans towards Kelly.
Philadelphia certainly appears to be a playoff contender in the NFC, although it will all depend on their health. They have positioned themselves very nicely to make a run, and Tebow could very well be a part of it.
What five reasons can be given to show why the Eagles should keep Tebow on their 2015 regular season roster?
1. He Is An Excellent Teammate
Tebow has shown throughout his NFL career that he cares about his teammates and is an excellent locker room presence. He may not be the best quarterback, but he is capable of being a good friend and leader for his teammates each and every day. One thing that showed during his season as a starter for the Denver Broncos was the fact that his team played hard for him, due to the fact that they liked him as a teammate.
2. Tebow Brings a Dual-Threat QB to the Field
Mobile quarterbacks fit into the system that Chip Kelly likes to run, and that is exactly what Tebow is. He doesn't have a great arm, but he has a good enough arm that he can stay on the field and help make plays with his legs as well. There aren't many quarterbacks that have the type of ability that Tebow has, and there are none that approach the physicality that he brings to the position.
3. Leadership is Key in the NFL
There aren't many players in the NFL that lead from the sidelines, but Tebow would be an exception to that. If there is one thing that Tebow does perfectly, it is leading a team and being the type of player that a coach would want the rest of his players to look up to within the team. Tebow showed that leadership with the Broncos, and he has shown it in every step of his life since then.
4. A Two-Point Conversion Machine
The NFL has changed their stance on extra points and has decided to move the extra point attempts back quite a ways to make things more difficult on kickers. As a result of that decision, there are expected to be quite a few more two-point conversion attempts throughout the year. Having a player like Tebow come onto the field will keep defenses guessing, as he will be able to take the football into the end zone himself or use his arm to convert the play.
5. Potential Growth in the Future
Tebow is 28 years old, and is still making quite a few improvements to his arm. He may never become a starting quarterback again, but there is a good chance that he will continue improving his game over the next few seasons. There is no question that he can develop into a very solid backup quarterback, or possibly compete for the starting job depending on how much more improvement he can make.
All of that being said, the Eagles need to keep Tebow on their roster for the upcoming season. He brings much more to the field than Barkley does, and fits into Kelly's system much better as well. It will be interesting to see what their final decision is, but Tebow has certainly played his way into contention for a roster spot.
