Houston Texans Should Try to Acquire QB Robert Griffin III

Robert Griffin III was viewed as the potential savior for the Washington Redskins' franchise just a few short years ago, but is now benched for the start of the 2015 season. Kirk Cousins is set to start in Week 1 for the Redskins, and there are quite a few rumors that Washington would consider a trade involving Griffin. One team that should look into trading for him is the Houston Texans, who currently don't appear to have a long-term quarterback option.

Brian Hoyer is heading into the 2015 season as the starting quarterback for the Texans, which obviously isn't the player that Houston would ideally be starting. Ryan Mallett didn't show any of the potential that many thought he had, and doesn't appear to have much of a future as a starting quarterback at this point in time.

If the Texans were smart, they would get on the phone immediately and discuss a potential trade for Griffin with the Redskins.

Heading to Houston would be somewhat of a homecoming for Griffin, who played his collegiate football at Baylor and grew up a large part of his younger years in Texas as well. Perhaps returning back to a familiar place would give him the type of confidence that he needs in order to get his career back on track.

Health has been the biggest problem for Griffin over the last few seasons, which isn't something that he or anyone else can control. Simply having bad luck shouldn't disqualify him from being given a second chance. Acquiring him at a reasonable price would be a very wise decision for any team in need of a quarterback, as the talent is obviously still there for him.

Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian is obviously still in favor of teams pursuing a potential trade for the Redskins' quarterback. He talked about what he would do, and it includes scouting him hard and figuring out what the issues are and whether or not they can be fixed.

"There was a huge learning curve and that was exacerbated tremendously by the injury. Mike Shanahan smartly adjusted his offense to that which RG III could handle in his rookie year. None of that has happened since and therefore he doesn't fit. I would say this: If I were running a club, I'd have my scouts looking awfully hard at what he might be able to do for my club."

Polian then went on to talk about the injury and the effect it has had on his career.

"He does still have that unique skill set that's tempered greatly by the injury history. The injury one has to bother you a great deal, but the bottom line is he's still a supremely talented athlete."

Needless to say, those comments alone make the case for scouting Griffin and potentially acquiring him. Washington isn't likely asking for a huge return for Griffin, but they are going to want a fourth or fifth round pick at least. There is a chance they would ask for a third-round pick, but it isn't all that likely.

At just 25 years old, there is no doubt that Griffin can still turn his career around and get back on track. His injury slowed him down in a big way and now he simply has no confidence. A fresh start would go a long way for him, and the Texans could be getting their long-term quarterback by acquiring him.

Expect to hear plenty of rumors surrounding Griffin over the next few weeks. Houston will hopefully consider the idea of trading for Griffin, and will at the very least place a phone call and see what it would take to get him.
