Wes Welker is one of the remaining NFL veteran free agents on the open market, and there haven't been many teams that have shown interest in signing him this season. The Green Bay Packers could use depth at the wide receiver (WR) position and should strongly consider signing the veteran wide receiver. Jordy Nelson's injury has forced them to rely on young and unproven players, which simply isn't safe long-term for the Packers as they look to contend for a championship in 2015.
Signing another receiver isn't necessarily a must for the Packers, but a veteran would be much more reliable than one of the three young receivers that Green Bay currently has.
During the 2014 season with the Denver Broncos, Welker caught 49 passes for 464 yards and two touchdowns. It was a down season for him, but he has been a fairly reliable 1,000-yard receiver throughout the majority of his career. Age is beginning to catch up to him a bit, but he is still capable of making 50 catches per season, which is exactly what Green Bay needs behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.
At 34 years old, Welker is more than capable of being a solid number three receiving option. Cobb and Adams are both ready to step up and come through with big production for the Packers, while Welker could simply provide a consistent help for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers across the middle in the short game.
Rodgers is more than capable of making his young receivers better around him, but he is also capable of helping Welker get his career back on track. Assuming that Welker is done because his numbers have slowed down a bit over the last couple of seasons is a big mistake.
Welker would be a very solid veteran addition for the Packers, which is exactly the type of player that they need. He wouldn't be upset if the Packers don't throw him the football a ton or even play him as much as he has over the past few years, but he could come up big for Green Bay down the stretch of the season as they look to make a playoff run.
More than likely, Welker would come at a very cheap price and would provide much more production than the Packers would be paying for. Green Bay simply cannot afford to hope and pray that a young receiver steps up, and the need to have a veteran ready to step onto the field to make a difference. Welker is the best option available in free agency, and would be the type of addition that could change the Packers' season.
Expect to hear plenty more rumors come out of Green Bay about the wide receiver position. It certainly makes sense that they would go out and pursue another receiver, and Welker would make more sense than any other potential option.
