Suraj Pancholi, son of actor Aditya, was question by Indian police Thursday in connection with the death of actress Jiah Khan in 2013. It is likely that Suraj will be called again, noted the website NDTV.com. Sources for the site says that Suraj's father was also examined. The agency is probing a criminal conspiracy angle in the death of the actress. Jiah's mother is the driving force behind these investigations. She has maintained from the very beginning that her daughter's death was not a suicide.
Last year, the Bombay High Court directed the CBI to look into whether Jiah's death was homicide or suicide.
The case had come to CBI last year following the orders of the Bombay High Court, which had directed the agency to probe whether the death was suicide or homicide on a plea from Jiah's mother Rabia.
"The High Court has directed the CBI to consider whether this is a case of suicidal or homicidal death. If it comes to a conclusion that it is a homicidal death, then further probe be made to find out who is the perpetrator of the crime and accordingly action be taken," CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad had said after registration of the case.
The spokesperson went on to say that the Mumbai Police have filed a charge sheet against a person under section 306 of the IPC (providing aid to help someone commit suicide). The reasons behind the switch from the Mumbai police to the CBI was that forensic opinion obtained by Jiah's mother varied wildly from that of the police's.
The official cause of death was suicide. The 25-year-old actress was said to be unhappy because of her relationship with Suraj was failing. However, Jiah's mother provided morgue photos of the actress that showed bruises all over her body, leading them to believe Jiah was murdered.
