‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Shonda Rhimes Defends Patrick Dempsey Season 11 Death?

It's been a few weeks since Shonda Rhimes coldly and unceremoniously killed off Partick Dempsey's character on Grey's Anatomy after more than a decade of playing Dr. Derek Shepherd on the primetime ABC medical drama, and many of the show's diehard fans have yet to come to terms with the unnecessary murder of one of the TV show's most beloved stars. Shonda Rhimes has done her best to justify the decision -- insisting that the plot inevitably drifted in that direction all on its own. According to the latest gossip news updates, Dempsey was fired for constantly feuding with the Shondaland showrunner, but McDreamy seems more than happy to leave the show to focus on his amateur racing career as well as his impending divorce to longtime wife, Jillian Fink.

There is currently a petition that has already garnered more than a 100,000 supporters on Change.org demanding that Shonda Rhimes bring back Patrick Dempsey's character to Grey's Anatomy by any means necessary, but the ABC showrunner with the Midas touch explained in a statement to Entertainment Weekly following McDreamy's untimely death that the show would be better off without him around:

"Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character -- for Meredith, for me and for the fans.

"His loss will be felt by all. [But] now, Meredith and the entire Grey's Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life.

"The possibilities for what may come are endless."

While Dempsey has made it clear that he is kind of happy to be walking away from Grey's after filming more than 250 episodes from the first season onwards, he explained to the Telegraph that he certainly doesn't plan to leave acting altogether now that he's no longer going to be Dr. McDreamy:

"I had three or four things offered to me this year and I looked at the scripts and asked myself whether they would move the bar for me in my professional life. The answer was 'No'.

"I see no reason why I can't combine acting and racing...Work-life balance is a constant refinement."

That being said, Dempsey knows that thaving two high-profile careers can be a strain on his kids but explained that he hope the sacrifices they were all being forced to make on his behalf would inspire them to be selfish in similar ways when they're adults:

"I tried in the past to bring the kids along but it's difficult now to disrupt their schooling.

"Being away is a sacrifice, but it's important for them to know that they should follow their dreams like I do."

It's hard to understand why Shonda Rhimes wasn't willing to do whatever it took to keep a nice guy like Patty Dempsey on the show forever and ever.
