‘Grey's Anatomy’ Fans Demand Patrick Dempsey Return to ABC TV Show [NEWS]

Despite the fact that he recently signed a deal with ABC extending his Grey's Anatomy contract another two years, Patrick Dempsey's beloved McDreamy was ruthless killed off Shondalands' original flagship series. According to the latest gossip news updates, however, Derek Shepherd's death is just not sitting very well with some of his fans, and they're demanding that showrunner Shonda Rhimes somehow bring his character back form the dead. One group of traumatized fans have even started an online petition begging Shonda to "flip the script...literally", that has already gained as more than 87,000 supporters. Dempsey, who is going currently going through a divorce, insists that he thinks the timing of his departure couldn't more perfect.

Although Grey's audience might not have been at all ready for Patrick Dempsey's character to unceremoniously meet his end in Season 11 of the hit primetime medical drama, he definitely was.

In Entertainment Weekly's' interview with the man behind Derek Shepherd just days before the death of the iconic character, Patrick Dempsey seemed completely at peace with his passing:

"It just sort of evolved. It just kind of happened.

"[Being written off] was something that was kind of surprising and uh, just naturally came to be.

"I like the way it has all played out."

That being said -- it would be unfair to assume that Shonda or her team came to the decision causally; Dempsey explained that Rhimes would never kill members of the cast of just for the shock value:

"The fans care deeply.

"I think Shonda cares deeply about the fans, and how they will react. Shepherd is a beloved character."

Regardless of Ellen Pompeo's statement about now getting to deal with the very compelling storylines that are generated from a person moving past a seeming unpassable tragedy, many fans just want Shepherd brought back ASAP.

In fact, there is a petition on Change.org this very minute gaining supports who are demanding Rhimes right her wrongs and return Derek safe and sound -- no questions asked:

"You've destroyed us. COMPLETELY!

"THIS IS NOT WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT! WE WANT DEREK BACK! BRING HIM BACK!

"FLIP THE FREAKING SCRIPT! LITERALLY!"

While it is doubtful that the online petition will carry much sway with Shonda Rhimes even if it does hit its proposed goal of a 150,000 supporters, Patrick Demspey seemed to think that 11-consecituive-years on the show was still a hell of a legacy:

"This was the first year that I haven't been in every episode. I've been in every episode since the pilot-close to 250 episodes.

"That's a huge run."

At least, the fans will be able to see Derek Shepherd in syndication for years-and-years to come.
