As hard as it might be to believe, it looks like Shonda Rhimes might be killing off Patrick Dempsey's character, Derek Shepherd, in tonight's episode of Grey's Anatomy -- three full weeks before the May 14 finale. According to the latest gossip spoilers news updates, McDreamy just recently gave an interview that strongly seemed to suggest that he won't ever be making it back form D.C. Plus, it seems that ABC has made room for a two-hour episode next week, presumably to let Ellen Pompeo and the rest of the Season 11 cast deal with the drama of yet another tragic plane crash.
While it seems pretty hard to imagine that Shonda Rhimes would suddenly kill off an original Grey's Anatomy cast member as central to the plot as Derek Shepherd weeks before the slated finale, word has it that it exactly what she has done.
It seem that Patrick Dempsey has all but confirmed his departure in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, and according to Hollywood Life the entire spread is pretty much dedicated to that fact:
"Dark and twisty doesn't even begin to describe last week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, but nobody was more surprised at the dramatic exit of Dr. Derek Shepherd than Patrick Dempsey himself.
"The actor spoke exclusively to EW about checking out of Grey's -- for good."
Seemingly confirming that something epic definitely goes down on Grey's tonight is the report by EW that ABC has already cleared out a second hour next week to deal with the aftermath of aforementioned earth shattering event on an extra-long episode:
"Originally slated for Thursday, May 7, the fourth season finale of Scandal has now been moved to May 14 at 9 p.m. ET
"The reason for the move is because Grey's will air a two-hour episode on Thursday, April 30, pushing Scandal back a week.
"Both shows will air as scheduled on May 7 ahead of their finales the following week."
If this is the end of Dempes's run on Grey's, as has been widely reported all season long, than his fans might have to wait a little while before they see him acting in anything again.
Long before breaking the news outright to Entertainment Weekly, Patrick told the Portland Press Herald that he might be inclined to give the whole thing a little rest once he finally gets to retire McDreamy:
"I do want to act [after Grey's Anatomy], but I might take a break and go race and travel first. I haven't found a piece of material I want to do yet."
Well...when you think about it, don't McSteamy and McDreamy really belong together anyways.
