Much has been made over Patrick Dempsey's sudden and untimely death in a recent episode of Grey's Anatomy. According to the latest gossip news updates, Derek Shepherd was callously murdered off, because ABC wunderkind Shonda Rhimes was tired of his feuding with cast and guest stars alike. Word has it that there just wasn't enough room for both McDreamy and his ego on the TV show in Season 11, so the showrunner decided that the both had to go. For his part, however, the racecar driver, who is currently divorcing his longtime wife, Jillian Fink, has had nothing but nice things to say about his former boss since leaving the series.
While Patrick Dempsey's McDreamy has always come off as nice enough during his 11-year tenure on the program, behind the scenes it is now being reported the actor playing the character was not acting so nice.
One behind-the-scenes production source reveals in the May 11, issue of OK! Magazine, that Dempsey's termination was almost as long in the making as his 250-plus-episode run on the show:
"Patrick's ego is well known in Hollywood.
"He never interacts with the cast and crew...He's even rude to celebs who cameo on the show.
"Shonda's had to put him in check more than once."
The informant explained that Shonda was willing to let things go right up until the point she felt that Patrick's bad behavior was starting to reflect poorly on herself:
"Shonda is tired of having to apologize for him."
Despite all the speculation that Derek's time on the show was cut short thanks to his long running feud with Shonda Rhimes and the rest of the cast, Dempsey had nothing but positive things to say about the Grey's Anatomy mastermind in his recent Entertainment Weekly in-depth interview:
"It's extraordinary what Shonda Rhimes can do, with the shows she is running and how creative she is and how hands on she is. To sustain that is pretty remarkable."
Patrick goes on to explain that the real reason that the fans are reacting so viscerally to the death of Derek McDreamy is that Shonda invented a character so perfectly that every woman can't help but love him:
"He is the ideal man, and that's what Shonda constructed. There's a projection [of him] onto me when you come in contact with fans, certainly with the younger and older fans.
"It made me grow, too. There were good qualities [of his] that you work on to obtain."
Perhaps, Dempsey should have worked just a little bit harder.
