It probably comes as no shock to his fans that now that Patrick Dempsey has left his high-paying job on ABC's Grey Anatomy, coupled with his ongoing divorce from soon-to-be ex-wife, Jillian, that the 46-year-old veteran actor turned racecar driver is selling his Malibu mansion. According to the latest gossip news updates, the real reason Derek Shepherd was fired had to do with his constant clashing with Season 11 showrunner, Shonda Rhimes, but Dempsey still insists that he has nothing but respect and admiration for his old boss.
Not only is Patrick Dempsey reportedly planning to take a break from acting now that he's left Grey's Anatomy after 11-very-eventful-years, he is said to be leaving Malibu for the time being as well.
In light of his divorce and his early retirement from Grey's, Us Weekly reports that Patrick Dempsey is selling his palatial Frank Gehry-designed estate for a cool $14.5 million.
Whatever his exact reasons for putting the property on the market, Dempsey clearly was still in love with the place during his interview with Architectural Digest last year (via Us Weekly):
"The exterior's simplicity appealed to me, and the inside felt very expansive and calming. Everywhere you looked there was something visually pleasing."
A source close to the behind-the-scenes drama told Page Six that Patrick might still have his job and his house to if he hadn't forgotten his place in the Grey's Anatomy hierarchy (via Us Weekly):
"Patrick has been acting like a diva and has clashed with [creator Shonda Rhimes].
"She suspended him for a while, and the word on set is that he isn't coming back full time.
"Given all the past problems with Katherine Heigl and Isaiah Washington, there is little tolerance on the show for troublesome talent."
While it's true that everything happened pretty fast once the decision to kill off his character for the sake of the show was made, Dempsey certainly didn't seem to have any hard feeling when talking to Entertainment Weekly about his departure:
"It's extraordinary what Shonda Rhimes can do, with the shows she is running and how creative she is and how hands on she is. To sustain that is pretty remarkable.
"Things happened very quickly, where we were like, Oh this is where it's going to go. It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way.
"[Being written off] was something that was kind of surprising and uh, just naturally came to be. I like the way it has all played out."
While he may not be able to keep his house, it's pretty clear that Patrick Dempsey is doing his best to walk away from this embarrassing Grey's Anatomy fiasco with his dignity still intact.
