Avengers and Avengers 2: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon is stepping down from the top of the Marvel empire. The keys to the Marvel kingdom are now being handing over to Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America 3: Civil War directors Anthony and Joe Russo. However, that leaves some wondering if the Russo Brothers will have the time to helm the upcoming Ghostbusters 3 movie.
Joss Whedon previously expressed his plans to exit the series, telling Empire (via Slashfilm):
"I couldn't imagine doing this again. It's enormously hard, and it [will] be, by [the time I would make 'Avengers 3 & 4'], a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own. So it's very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War’ movie that would eat up the next four years of my life. I obviously still want to be a part of the Marvel Universe –- I love these guys -– but it ain't easy. This year has been more like running three shows than any year of my life. It is bonkers."
The Russo Brothers are also expected to helm the upcoming male Ghostbusters film, as Ivan Reitman told Deadline:
“This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew [Pearce] will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”
