Jason Leffler, NASCAR star, died Wednesday after wrecking in New Jersey. The injuries he sustained from the wreck ended all hopes of saving the young man's life.
Shortly after 9:00 p.m, the 37-year-old driver was pronounced dead by New Jersey Police. The tragic accident occurred on the dirt track of Bridgeport Speedway.
Official documents indicate that Leffler had to be extricated from his vehicle at 8:30 p.m. By then, it was too late to save him.
He was in second place when his car began flipping out of control. Eyewitness sources claim it was a horrific site.
NASCAR issued a formal statement in the wake of the tragedy:
"NASCAR extends its thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Jason Leffler who passed away earlier this evening. For more than a decade, Jason was a fierce competitor in our sport and he will be missed.""We are very saddened at the passing of Jason Leffler. He was one of the most versatile race drivers in America, showing his talent by competing in the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400. Jason was a terrific guy who always had time for everyone. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his entire family, team and fans."
Denny Hamlin, fellow racer, played tribute to Leffler. Both Hamlin and Leffler drove the No. 11 Toyota car. To honor his fellow competitor, Hamlin returned the car's paint job to what it was when Leffler drove it.
