Howard Stern Recap: Voted Father of the Year

Howard Stern, the King of All Media, is now the King of All Fathers. He wins OFFBEAT's first annual Father of the Year award.

Howard Stern has done it all. He's starred in a number one movie, written two bestselling books and created the greatest radio show of all time. But...all of that is small potatoes, when it comes to how great of a father he is.

When people hear Stern's name, they don't necessarily associate it with a family man...but they should. Stern has made countless sacrifices for his children and family in the past, but because he is a stand up guy, he doesn't go around bragging about it.

Instead, listeners gain insight into his parenting from Stern's mega-hit radio program The Howard Stern Show, available on SiriusXM. It is here where fans really get to know the superstar and the lessons he has passed on to his children.

First, Stern believes in personal accountability. Stern, who doesn't classify himself as either Democrat or Republican, has no patience for those who dodge their responsibilities. Fans are familiar with his Libertarian-like rants about how families should not have children (or adopt pets) if they are incapable of taking care of them.

Stern acknowledges that sometime people need help (and is sympathetic to their situation), but to have a child or pet when you know you can't care for them is just plain reckless.

Second, Stern knows a thing or two about a healthy work ethic. Howard, who has been broadcasting since before I was born, has never missed a day of work. He has one of the most insane work-ethics of anyone--going to bed at 9:00 p.m, focusing only on his show, developing bits in his off time, etc, etc, etc.

Third, Stern is a huge champion of civil rights. Specifically, he is (and has been for quite some time) a fierce advocate for gay rights. Long before it was popular, Stern called for the injustices homosexuals face to come to an end.

While Stern appeals to a wide audience, some would argue that his core listeners are blue collar folks like construction workers and truck drivers--a group that is not necessarily inclined to fight for gay rights. This is a lot different from Matthew Shepard's mom speaking at a PFLAG event.

Finally, Stern is one of the most charitable celebs around. He has dedicated countless hours (and probably millions of dollars) to animal welfare. Most notably, he and wife, Beth, help support North Shore Animal League.

They are a no-kill animal shelter that rescues abused and abandoned animals in New York. To honor Howard Stern as King of All Dads, please donate to North Shore Animal Leage and write "Best Dad" in the description.

For all of these reasons, and many, many more, we congratulate Howard Stern on being father of the year.
