Game 3 of the NBA Finals opened with Sebastian De La Cruz performing the "National Anthem." Despite receiving critical acclaim for his rendition, Sebastian faced racist comments in the wake of his performance.
Sebastian's singing earned him the praise of many. But, as is common when you achieve national recognition, the actions have garnered him a significant amount of unfair criticism.
Sebastian, who first rose to popularity on the hit show America's Got Talent was attacked on various social media outlets after the game.
De La Cruz, who was greeted by a mayoral introduction and standing ovation, performed perfectly. If you don't believe us, check out the video below.
Despite this, De La Cruz was attacked so fiercely that he felt the need to release a statement to ABC Houston concerning the event:
"I think the people were talking bad because of what I was wearing and it's not my fault. It's what I love and I'm just proud to be a mariachi singer. It's their opinion actually and if they don't like mariachi, that's their problem. I love it."
The 11-year-old mariachi star sure does seem to have his head on his shoulders. In numerous interviews and on NBC's AGT, especially, the young star has stated his undying love of this country.
The fans, as well as the Mayor, picked up on this. San Antonio mayor, Julian Castro, felt the need to issue the following statement:
"I'm proud of our young San Antonio superstar Sebastian de la Cruz for a spectacular rendition of our national anthem at last night's Spurs game. Sebastian, don't let a few negative voices get you down. You are a true talent and you represent the best of our nation's future!"
Despite the barrage of racially themed comments, San Antonio asked the blooming singer to perform at Game 4 of the finals.
