The Green Bay Packers are considered by many to be the NFL's greatest football team. The people of Wisconsin like to think their boys in green and yellow are held to a higher degree of accountability. However, their track record has shown that Green Bay is just as likely to be involved in a scandal as any other team. In recent news, Packers defensive lineman, Letroy Guion, was arrested for multiple gun and drug related felonies. This is the worst scandal to affect the former champs since Johnny Jolly's substance abuse case in 2011.
Green Bay is actually the third oldest team in NFL history. They were originally organized in 1919, and they are the only professional sports team that operates on a non-profit basis.
The Packers have won 13 league championships, the most in NFL history, including nine NFL titles prior to the Super Bowl era and four Super Bowl victories. Over the years, they have formed a number of rivalries against the other members of the NFC North division.
All in all, the Packers are well respected, and fans are often exited to see how the team will progress. But, there may be a hold up.
According to Terez Owens, Letroy Guion's recent drug arrest goes against an unspoken Green Bay code of honor:
"Packers defensive tackle Letroy Guion was arrested for felony possession of marijuana and felony possession of a firearm in his hometown of Starke, Florida, according to a police report. Guion was found to have 357 grams of marijuana after his truck was pulled over earlier this week. They also found more than $190,000 in cash and a 9mm semi-automatic handgun in Letroy Guion's truck. This dude wasn't messing around..."
Green Bay scandals are far and few between, but when they do occur, it is easy to see why it draws so much attention. According to Cover 32, Johnny Jolly's 2011 scandal was the last time fans heard anything negative about Wisconsin's biggest team:
"Johnny Jolly was arrested in October of 2011 for possession of a narcotic compound containing codeine. He had been caught using drugs before, but was never suspended by the NFL. This time Jolly paid the price and was not only suspended by the NFL, but sentenced to six years in prison, a shocker for many Packer fans who had high hopes for the big defensive lineman. Jolly served six months of his sentence and was reinstated by the NFL last season..."
