Ray Rice's attack on Janay Palmer is one of the most significant and disgraceful acts of violence from an athlete in the history of the NFL. Almost equally as disgraceful, has been how the NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell has handled the situation. The circumstances have almost ruined his reputation, and many have even called for Goodell to resign. Interestingly, though, Goodell has kept some supporters. According to recent reports, NY Giant's co-owner John Mara spoke out on behalf of the commissioner.
Before he held his current position, Goodell's career in the NFL actually started out with an internship. Originally, he served as an administrative intern for the then-commissioner Pete Rozelle. After that, he interned for the New York Jets.
Roger climbed the ranks to Assistant President of the AFC, and then, as we all know, he eventually made it to the rank of top dog.
At the time, he was unanimously chosen to take the position, however, it is safe to say that those who voted for him are now regretting their decision.
According to NY Daily News, Goodell's handling of the Rice incident hasn't sat well with most people:
"It is no longer in dispute, not even in the NFL offices on Park Ave., that Goodell has made a mess of this thing from the start. It is why he is paying a steep price for it, and may eventually pay with his job. f it can be proved that Goodell, who says he didn't see that video until Monday morning, actually saw it back in April...even the National Organization for Women calling for him to resign."
A lot of people have since joined the bandwagon that Goodell is not the right man for the job. Even the President of the U.S. has expressed his disappointment. Still, according to TMZ Sports, Goodell still has some supporters:
"NY Giants co-owner John Mara says there's no doubt Roger Goodell's reputation took a major hit due to his handling of the Ray Rice incident...but he's fully confident Roger will bounce back. Mara...voiced his support for the NFL commish while acknowledging Goodell has a serious PR problem. [Saying,] 'No question he's been damaged by recent events...He's a pretty strong person and he can get by this and I think he can repair his reputation.'"
