An Englishman (Back) in New York: Sting to Do 10 Shows for 'The Last Ship' at Public Theater, Then Broadway
British pop star Sting will perform songs from his new album, The Last Ship at 10 concerts later this year that will benefit New York's Public Theater. The singer, who shot to fame in the band the Police, said the concerts will run from September 25 through October 9 at the 260-seat Anspacher Theater at the arts organization in Manhattan. "In most European economies, there is very significant government support that fills the gap between ticket revenue and the reasonable expense of running an orchestra or opera company. The U.S. has never had that tradition. Some see this as a failing, but as I watch with complete dismay how Washington is increasingly captive to destructive politics, I know that I would far rather deal with generous individuals who donate money and expertise to running an organization, than be beholden to government bureaucrats themselves beholden to unreasonable political forces."
