George Clooney is set to make his Broadway debut next spring in a stage adaptation of his 2005 journalism drama 'Good Night, and Good Luck.'

Clooney, who played Fred W. Friendly in the original, will now play the role of Edward R. Murrow.

In a statement, Clooney said, "I am honored, after all these years, to be coming back to the stage, especially to Broadway, the art form and the venue that every actor aspires to."

'Good Night, and Good Luck' depicts when Murrow's work brought him into conflict with Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, a Republican from Wisconsin who gained fame for the extremes of his anti-Communist campaign.

Clooney and Grant Heslov co-wrote the film and are collaborating again on the Broadway adaptation.

Critic A.O. Scott gave a film review for The New York Times. Scott described it as "a passionate, thoughtful essay on power, truth-telling, and responsibility."

David Cromer, who earned a Tony Award for directing 'The Band's Visit,' will be directing the stage adaptation.

The play's producers, Seaview, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Jean Doumanian, and Robert Fox, said on Monday that 'Good Night, and Good Luck' will be performed at a Shubert theater next spring but provided no other details.

Furthermore, Clooney has received two Academy Awards as an actor in 'Syriana' and a producer in 'Argo.'

Recently, Clooney directed an adaptation of 'The Boys in the Boat,' a sports drama set during the Great Depression.

The news comes after it was revealed last week that Ayad Akhtar's upcoming show will also mark Robert Downey Jr.'s Broadway debut. Other Hollywood performers made their Broadway debuts in the most recent season, including Steve Carell and Rachel McAdams, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance in 'Mary Jane.'
