Fresh from his Oscar win, Robert Downey Jr. is slated to achieve another career milestone with his Broadway debut this coming fall season, as he will star in Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ayad Akhtar's new play: "McNeal."
The production will be steered under Bartlett Sher's direction and held at the Lincoln Center Theater (LCT). That said, it will first run previews at the Vivian Beaumont Theater starting on Sept. 5, before opening on Sept. 30 at the LCT in time for its 40th anniversary season.
The play, however, is going to operate as a limited engagement show strictly until Nov. 24.
About 'McNeal' and Robert Downey's Role in the Play
Downey will make his inaugural appearance at the Main Stem in the production's titular role of Jacob McNeal, a prolific writer who struggles to reconnect with his estranged son amid endeavors of producing his new work.
While old grudges bubble to the surface, the looming shadow of Artificial Intelligence and the wave of temptations that come with it come crashing down, consuming all. Further casting will be announced in the future.
As for the new show's creative team, it comprises set designers Michael Yeargan and Jake Barton, costume designer Jennifer Moeller, lighting designer Donald Holder, sounds Justin Ellington and Beth Lake, and projection designer Jake Barton.
Jennifer Rae Moore will be in charge of stage management, while the LCT will be producing the show in association with Team Downey, a production company the "Iron Man" actor founded alongside his wife Susan back in 2010.
