They back and all hot and bothered by the devil again. The right wing protest group One Million Moms often launch memorably nutty campaigns against targets in entertainment. The Fox television show Lucifer has seemed to be a bone that really sticks in their throats. A while back the group had The Olive Garden in their sights for a possible boycott because they committed the egregious sin of buying advertising time during Lucifer. Now, they want the Energizer Bunny to stop giving batteries to old Scratch. It seems they are threatening Energizer for the same sin daring to decide they want to advertise on the show. Apparently, these people have no understanding of free speech issues.
One Million Moms have another issue with the show and, in particular, actor Tom Ellis's portrayal of his character Lucifer Morningstar. They find it to be too damn sexy. They feel that the show is making the devil sympathetic and irresistable to women. Quoting what they have to say about the show according to DarkHorizons makes for amusing reading. "It is meant to make people rethink assumptions about good and evil, including about God and Satan. The program included graphic acts of violence, a nightclub featuring scantily clad women, and a demon. The message of the show is clear. Lucifer is just misunderstood. He doesn't want to be a bad guy, it's God who is forcing him to play that role." Yep, they got all that from a few episodes of a Fox TV show. Talk about taking things literally.
The premise of Lucifer is loosely taken from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman comic book. The show simply has the devil bored with hell and taking a vacation from it all in L.A. where he owns a nightclub and chooses to help a detective solve crime, so he can study human behavior. According to the website the MIC, Lucifer is generally depicted as the handsomest of all the angels. It turns out that both the comic book and T.V.show depictions are far more accurate that One Million Moms. Satan only has a horn and a tail in popular culture depictions or Halloween costumes.
