The San Antonio Spurs' success lies on the bench. According to the Washington Post, "San Antonio's reserves have noticed slightly fewer minutes per contest (19.9) compared to a season ago (20.8). However, while the minutes have diminished, the production has never been higher: San Antonio's 58.1 true shooting percentage by the reserves leads every team by at least 2.9 percent and their bench's net rating is first by a mile." Relying not just on starters but improving depth through the bench has caused the Spurs to be the heavy favorite in tonight's game. As long as they play as they have been for the majority of the season, they'll likely win tonight.
The Phoenix Suns face a steep uphill challenge against the Spurs. Several players are injured, and it's bad enough that on Wednesday "The Suns only had nine available players for practice and assistant coach Jason Frasor had to fill in as an extra body," according Arizona Sports. Right now, it looks like the best strategy for the Suns is not to push to hard tonight, keep players from getting injured and focus on resting everyone up for games down the road where they'll actually have enough bodies to have depth.
