The wildly talented bassist-singer-songwriter, Esperanza Spalding, has announced her next album, Emily's D+Evolution. Inspired by sleepless nights and a contemplation inspired by the moon cycle, it is expected to drop March 4. In the meantime, however, it is up for pre-order with the first 500 being issued being signed copies.
The disc certainly has a mystifying back-story to say the least. Having conjured up the concept in a dream, the sounds are expected to be in correlation with last year's summer tour, which was more performance art than concert. And with the artist's affinity for flair and pageantry in her performances, it is no surprise that the new endeavor will be a unique experience, both for listener and creator.
Esperanza has donned a new character named "Emily," a name born from her middle initial, created from the mind in similar fashion as Athena. After the dearly departed David Bowie, Esperanza's change in character can be directly attributed to a Bowie-esque transformation (though the idea was conceived before his death).
Nate Chinen wrote of the new tunes from the artist:
"She has described 'Emily's D+Evolution,' her concept-minded new body of songs, as a callback to the purer creative intentions of a child. Emily is her middle name, and it was what people called her back when she first wore braids and big glasses, and seemed always to be putting on a show in the backyard. If that sounds like wistful remembrance of a simpler time, maybe it is. 'See this pretty girl' were the first words Ms. Spalding sang on Friday. 'Watch this pretty girl flow.'"
As of late, there hasn't been much else in accordance with the release. However, pre-orders can be filed on her website with a free download of "One" for every order.
