Harlem's Apollo Theater is set to stage two performances from Grammy winning jazz musician Esperanza Spalding on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. with admission set at $40 and $65.
Spalding will perform works from her chart topping "Radio Music Society," album. That is geared to incorporate music meant for a "big band."
Joining her on her stay at the Apollo will be her newly formed Radio Music Society ensemble which is a 12 member unit that includes Spalding herself.
Other musicians in the band include pianist Leo Genovese, Jef Lee Johnson guitarist and back up vocalist as well Lyndon Rochelle a drummer and backing vocals.
Chris Turner is a backing vocalist and Tia Fuller is an alto saxophonist as well as the group's Musical Director. Daniel Blake is the tenor and soprano saxophonist, Aaron Burnett plays the tenor saxophone as well and playing the trombone will be Jeff Galindo and Corey King. Trumpeters are Igmar Thomas and Leala Cyr who is also a backing vocal.
Spalding who was inspired by cellist Yo Yo Ma as a child is also a Grammy Award winner in 2011 in the category for "Best New Artist." The jazz musician also picked up a Boston Music Award in the same year for "Jazz Artist of the Year."
In the works for Spalding and her Radio Music Society are trips to Texas, South Carolina, Florida and Virginia. The Apollo will their last stop in America as Spalding and her band is set to tour Europe with the first stop being in Bilbao, Spain on Oct. 30.
