Immersive theater is all the rage at the moment and the show 8Players is the high point of this style so far. In this new style of theater, you are the actor. No longer do you have to sit on your butt and watch as others act out fantasy and oddly perverse little situations. You are there, right in the middle of it all, as it happens. No time to think, only do, and because it is so popular, it's run is being extended through March of 2016.
Strong critical notices have helped the show extend its life, as well as add new kinks to the story line. The New York Times, Village Voice, Time Out New York have all gave the show high praise. From the show's press release, comes this, "8Players is a new level of escapist entertainment. Like 2011's game-changing Sleep No More, it draws on the destabilizing effect ocasting viewers into a new environment. This immersive theater pop-up tightens the intimacy. Prepare to get to know strangers a whole lot better..."
In the course of the play, the audience is offered several different genre choices. The press release suggests that to truly love the show, frequent visits are encouraged. The website describes the services the group offers this way, "Shed your skin. Step into a customized night in which plots unfurl and secrets are kept: a trip out of reality custom-built for every group. As your show approaches, 8Players is tailored to each audience member. Arrive at an undisclosed location. Fall into a world starring you. Play your role. Lose your inhibitions. Come alone or as a pair. With only space for 8 audience-participants per event, embark on a socially adventurous night out."
The show was created by Russ Tipograph. Courtesy of Indiewire, this is how Mr. Tipograph explains his work, "I thought, let's not just watch our favorite movies repeatedly, let's enter them! (I'm talking very Purple Rose Of Cairo here). Participating in 8Players is something certain people enjoy -- a live event, dark atmosphere, camp performances.... If movies are your thing, this may entertain. Not for everybody, which never hurts, but it's here! The perfect Oscar season gift."
Tickets start at $100. They are available at 8players.com.
