If you haven’t seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet, don’t worry because you have already seen it, sometime between 1974 and whatever year it was you turned five. That is right, The Force Awakens is a cheap ripoff of A New Hope and now George Lucas is finally calling Disney and J.J. Abrams out on it.
Recently, George Lucas spoke to Indiewire where he opened up about the rip off (sorry “retro movie”) that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens:
"They wanted to do a retro movie. I don't like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."
Lucas went on to discuss how everyone tried to repeat the success of the first Star Wars film when it first came out:
“Everybody went out and made spaceship movies and they were all horrible and they all lost tons of money. And you say, there's more to it than that. You just can’t go out and do spaceship.”
George went on to discuss how he understands Disney wanting to go the original route, adding:
“Of course, the only way you could really do that [make money] is not take chances. Only do something that’s proven. You gotta remember, 'Star Wars' came from nowhere. 'American Graffiti' came from nowhere. There was nothing like it. Now, if you do anything that’s not a sequel or not a TV series or doesn’t look like one, they won’t do it!”
