Stephen Colbert's ratings may be down, but The Late Night Show host still knows his music. Monday night, Colbert's house band, Stay Human with Jon Batiste as bandleader, played a collaborative set with guest band, Vulfpeck, of "Sleepify" fame, featuring vocals by Antwaun Stanley. They played the incredibly funky song "1612" from their new album Thrill of the Arts.
All throughout the show, Vulfpeck, played with Batiste and Stay Human when The Late Night Show cut to commercial breaks. The two bands were very much in sync with each others style and it was obvious both enjoyed the creative mix. The merging of Vulfpeck with Stay Human was a stroke of genius.
Vulfpeck first came to prominence after a bit of a run in with Spotify last year when the funk group used them to stream 10 tracks worth of silence. The pay off for fans was that the proceeds the band received from Spotify would in turn be used to fund an admission-free tour. Spotify only allowed Vulfpeck to leave the silent tracks up for about seven weeks before pulling it. After everything was said and done, Vulpeck did indeed manage to pull off their promised tour to the delight of fans.
While Stanley is not an actual member of the band, he has often sung for them. It is not difficult to see why. Stanley's smooth vocals fall right in line with Vulpeck's instrumental groove and gives it just the right edge to remind you of the days when funk was alive and well. Stanley also contributed vocals to the first track of Vulfpack's, My First Car.
Thrill of the arts was released in October of this year and was called, "gritty, in-your-face, not-prettified funk played with fire, by The Wall Street Journal.
